Website migration SEO: protect useful URLs before changing the CMS

A migration changes more than design. URLs, templates, internal links, canonicals and tracking can all change at once. The safest plan identifies what must survive before the new site replaces the old one.

How to approach the work

Export the current URL inventory using crawls, sitemaps, analytics and Search Console. Mark pages with organic traffic, backlinks and commercial value. Map each old URL to its closest relevant replacement. Do not send every removed page to the homepage merely to avoid errors.

What to check and change

Test redirects, status codes, canonicals, hreflang and important content on the new site. Check that development noindex rules are removed at launch. Update internal links to point directly to final URLs, then regenerate sitemaps from the deployed structure.

A practical example

Example: an Arabic service moves into an English path during a redesign. A redirect to an unrelated language homepage loses the original intent. Preserve the corresponding Arabic destination, map the old URL to it and maintain the correct English alternate.

What to measure and ask your agency

After launch, watch server errors, redirect chains, page-level clicks and conversions. Agree who can fix urgent issues and how to roll back. Your SEO agency should deliver a redirect map and a tested acceptance checklist, not simply announce that the new design is live.
