Hreflang for Arabic, English and Spanish: the SEO agency checklist

Multilingual SEO starts with useful versions of the same page. Hreflang connects those versions; it does not translate content or prove that a business has offices in each country. Keep language, country and service availability as separate decisions.

How to approach the work

Give each translation its own stable URL, language declaration and self-referencing canonical. Build a page-level mapping between equivalents. Each equivalent should reference itself and the other available versions. Do not send every alternate link to a language homepage when a matching article exists.

What to check and change

Use language codes such as ar, en and es for general language pages. Use a language-country combination only when the content deliberately targets that regional audience. An Arabic country name in a URL does not mean the page should use that country’s language code.

A practical example

Example: an Arabic guide about hiring an agency in Spain remains Arabic content. Its English and Spanish equivalents should connect to the same guide, not to unrelated Spanish service pages. Visitors also need visible language links they can use themselves.

What to measure and ask your agency

Validate reciprocal links, destination status, canonical consistency and actual language content. Your SEO agency should provide the mapping table and test a sample after deployment. Never claim that adding hreflang guarantees indexing or higher rankings.
